Antique Picture Frame restoration
Frames can become worn and dirty over time. They can crack or ornaments
break or have disappeared completely. We often see frames that have fallen
off walls, been damaged in house moves or removals. Often this can be
overlooked and often thought of as unrepairable but that is not the case.
With our restoration service we repair and restore Antique frames to the
highest standard using traditional methods and materials.
Examples of When and how can frames be restored?
Dirt and grime
Dirt, grime or soot can really spoil a frames appearance and after all the
frame is there to highlight the beaty of the art it holds. Careful cleaning
can often remove all or most of surface dirt that has been penetrating
the frames surface causing paint and gold to fade. Often just the clean
itself can transform a frame.
Lost and damaged decoration
Beautiful Frames often have very ornate decorations which with time
suffer the brunt of wear and tear. Once we have identified the missing
parts we can then take moulds to re-construct them. The aim is to
seamlessly integrate between the original and the new moulding making
it impossible to notice the new has been added. In addition to this the
new decoration can be gilded or painted in the original way it was
intended. Using traditional materials like hand mixed gesso and
composition a damaged frame can really take pride of place on any wall
again.
Traditional Gilding
Good quality frames throughout time have often been decorated with
gold and silver. Gold is the epitome of luxury and quality and is often the
perfect way to finish any frame. We use traditional gilding methods
when repairing frames and making new bespoke frames alike.
Repaired frame decorations can be gilded in the traditional way using
either water or oil and fine sheets of 23.5carat gold, a technique that has
not changed for centuries. Repaired decorations are often distressed to
match with the original frame.
Cracks, Missing or dulled finish.
Even if an antique frame has some small cracks or is dull in colour it
could be beneficial in most cases to cure this before it gets any worse. A
touch up is a great way to maintain a frame before any major
restoration work may need to be done.
Woodworm and insect treatment
Artwork can often be stored in undesirable places when its not on a wall
where it should be. Garages, sheds and outbuildings can be cold and
damp places. This can be a great place for woodworm and insects to
damage frames. We can treat woodworm and repair any chips, holes or
cracks in the wood making sure the frame can survive for many years to
come.
